HVLP SPRAY SYSTEM
Equipment Required
-
HVLP Turbine - Stage 4-6
-
HVLP Spray Gun (external mix tip)
-
Tip Size 1.8 - 2.2 mm
-
2 gallon pressure pot (large projects)
-
HVLP Cup gun with Qrt pot (small projects)
Instructions
LPLT
Low Pressure Large Tip
-
The fleck size can be changed larger or smaller by adjusting the material volume. If larger flecks are required increase the material volume. If smaller flecks are required lower the material volume.
-
Always practice on a piece of cardboard before starting the project.
-
Do not mechanically shake or mix Roxatone.
-
Projects less than 300 square feet do not need a 2 gallon pressure pot. A quart cup gun would be sufficient.
-
When using hvlp equipment, a tinted primer is recommended.
-
If the Roxatone is struggling to spray during hvlp application, add approximately 10-15% water.
Prepration of the Surface
When using HVLP spray equipment, it is important to
make sure a good solid base coat / primer is applied first. In most cases it is necessary to apply 2 coats of primer. Note . . Primer must be tinted to an approximate match of the Roxatone background color.
Application Method
When using HVLP equipment, a 2 coat cross-hatch method is required.
First Coat
-
Turn the paint volume knob to almost closed at the back of the spray gun. This will shear the flecks for a suitable base.
-
Apply Roxatone with a cross-hatch method using horizontal or vertical strokes for the First coat then reverse for the Second Coat.
-
Apply material approximately 18 - 24 inches away from the surface at a 90 degree angle to the wall.
-
Avoid pointing the spray gun up or down or to the side when applying Roxatone. Keep arm and gun pointed straight at the surface.
-
It is important to not apply too much material during this step as only 50 - 70% coverage is required.
-
Allow first coat to become tacky or to dry completely before moving on to the Second Coat.
The first coat is applied using vertical or horizontal strokes first then reverse for the second coat. Because this type of sprayer typically does not have air pressure control, the only metric that can be adjusted is the material volume. This is only changed at the gun.
Pattern Coat
The Second coat is applied using opposite directional strokes from the first coat. It is applied using higher paint volume but the same air pressure as first coat.
-
Turn material volume knob on the gun to the most open position.
-
Apply second coat with a cross-hatch method reversing stroke direction used for the for first Coat.
-
Apply material approximately 24 - 36 inches away from the surface at a 90 degree angle to the wall.
-
Avoid pointing the spray gun up or down or to the side when applying Roxatone. Keep arm and gun pointed straight at the surface to keep proper fleck shape.
-
When applying this step it is important to cover as much of the exposed primer as possible. Coverage should be between 50 - 70%.
-
The Second coat is a heavier coat and will take longer to dry than the first coat.
